SgurrEnergy Reports Completion of Independent Tests of Wind Measurement Device Galion LidarDate Posted: August 27, 2009 Glasgow, Scotland--International renewable energy consultancy SgurrEnergy is pleased to announce the successful completion of independent tests of their pioneering wind measurement device, the Galion Lidar. Verification was conducted by leading independent test laboratory Risø DTU at their Høvsøre test facility in Denmark.
Risø DTU has a globally acknowledged track record in Lidar studies with a particular emphasis on wind power applications and so was ideally placed to conduct a verification study on behalf of SgurrEnergy.
Ian Irvine, co-founder and technical director of SgurrEnergy commented, “This verification assures wind power professionals of the capability of the Galion to maximise the effective exploitation of the wind resource. "It is a truly unique tool which we believe will prove indispensible in our industry. "The Galion is a revolutionary device offering greater versatility which enables routine analysis of previously challenging sites.”
Galion Lidar is a pulsed laser based device for remotely measuring wind speed and direction for wind farms. Previously anemometer masts have been used to capture wind data. This has imposed limitations on the gathering of critical project data which the unique capabilities of the Galion now alleviate. The Galion is the only portable all sky scanning Lidar for wind power applications. It represents next generation technology allowing exact measurements to be acquired. To date the industry has had to rely on model approximations which introduce uncertainty into wind power projections. This can adversely affect project finance which in the current financial climate is of great significance. By using the Galion, wind farm developers can reduce and even eliminate this source of financial risk.
Dr Peter Clive, technical development consultant at SgurrEnergy stated, “The verification study shows that the Galion agreed with the reference instruments with key test parameter R² exceeding 0.99. "These test results will enable us to deploy the Galion in major wind power applications with even greater confidence. "We can now characterise wind flow with unprecedented detail and accuracy and allow optimum development and operation of wind farms. "For example using Galion’s unique steerable beam we can visualise the influence on wind flow of forestry, complex terrain and even wind turbines themselves up to a range of 2km.”
