Stoel Rives Expands Energy Capabilities in California and Sand Diego Office Moves to Larger Space

Date Posted: July 1, 2009

San Diego, CA —— Stoel Rives LLP, a full-service law firm, announced July 1 that energy attorneys Morten Lund and David Quinby have joined the firm's San Diego office as members of the Energy and Telecommunications group.

The San Diego office has relocated to a larger space located at 12265 El Camino Real, Suite 303, to accommodate further expansion.

Morten Lund, formerly a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP in Milwaukee, has experience in a broad variety of financing transactions, with particular focus on the development and financing of wind and solar energy projects.

Lund is a frequent presenter and author on renewable energy topics.

He earned his law degree from Yale University in 1995 and obtained his A.B. at Augustana College in 1992. He is admitted to practice law in the state of Wisconsin and is pending bar admission to the state of California.

David Quinby is the office managing partner of the firm's Minneapolis office, and will now split his practice between San Diego and Minneapolis.

He concentrates his practice on corporate, securities, finance, and merger and acquisition matters, with a particular focus on renewable energy clients and their project development efforts.

He is admitted to practice law in the state of Minnesota and is pending bar admission to the state of California.

"We are delighted that Morten and David are increasing the scope of renewable energy related services we can provide our clients from our San Diego office," said Howard Susman, a member of the firm's Renewable Energy group who opened the firm's San Diego office in 2006. "Morten has a national level of prominence and visibility, and we had crossed paths with him frequently. We greatly respect the practice he has developed, particularly in wind and solar generation and development, and he adds a significant capability.

"The addition of David to our California team, with his recognized and admired work in the wind and biofuels industries, is another invaluable resource for our clients,” Susman said. "The needs of our clients and the continuing growth in the energy industry in Southern California—wind energy and solar industry in particular—required that we increase our physical space and resources.

"Our new space accommodates for planned future growth, and we plan to double our current group of four attorneys in this office by the end of 2010," added Susman, who was named as a leader in the field of "Energy: Transaction" by Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business (2009).

"San Diego is a burgeoning market for the energy sector with significant companies, key regulators, and important participants across the board," said Tim Taylor, managing partner of the firm’s four California offices.

"We have significant M&A, debt finance, and tax equity experience involving energy projects throughout the United States, and our clients need these services in California.

"Our California energy team capabilities also include real estate, land use and permitting, equipment procurement and construction, state and federal regulation, environmental matters, and dispute resolution. We are poised to meet our clients’ needs on all levels,” Taylor said.

“The achievement of California's global warming and renewable portfolio standards will require many billions of dollars in additional electric transmission facilities, and our team is very experienced both with transmission and infrastructure siting and with transmission regulation," said Taylor.

"California has become a leader in renewable energy on both the local and national platforms, and many of our energy clients have headquarters or operations there," Taylor continued. "We are attending to the needs of our clients for more representation in California as a result, and we are planning for continued growth in all our markets. Our energy practice is growing rapidly, even in this recession."

Other recent changes in the firm's California offices include growth in Sacramento and the relocation of the firm's Lake Tahoe office.

In March, Michael Mills and Thomas Henry joined the firm's Sacramento office, where they practice in the Resources, Development, and Environment group.

The Sacramento office serves clients in energy and energy facility siting; oil, gas and mining; water law; environmental and natural resources; regulatory permitting; land use; and title insurance.

The office also advises industrial, agricultural and agency clients in the areas of storm water, industrial waste and point-source discharges, total maximum daily loads and regulatory enforcement.

In April, the firm moved its Lake Tahoe office to Truckee, where Stoel Rives attorneys advise and represent businesses, landowners, developers, contractors, design professionals, owners' associations and individuals in business and real estate matters of all kinds, including litigation and other dispute resolution.

Stoel Rives has received a national ranking for its Renewables and Alternative Energy practice from Chambers USA, rating among the top law firms in this category.

The firm has been at the forefront of incredible growth in renewables in recent years and represents many of the industry leaders in solar, wind energy, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric, ocean, combined-cycle natural gas, carbon sequestration and biofuels project development in California, the United States, Canada and abroad.

The firm's "Law of" reference books are tremendously popular and valued in the energy and clean tech industries.

The series includes: wind energy project development (“The Law of Wind”), geothermal project development ("Lava Law"), solar project development ("Lex Helius"), wave and tidal energy projects ("The Law of Ocean and Tidal Energy"), and biofuels ("The Law of Biofuels"), as well as spinoff publications ("The Law of the Stimulus Bill," "The Law of Cooperatives" and "The Law of Building Green").
